Cooking For One (…or Two)
COOKING can be a challenge as we age and many of us are empty nesters or we live alone. Being able to simplify or decrease the amount of cooking can be challenging, and if we are not careful food waste can occur, which we want to avoid. There are so many great cookbooks and recipes out there which can be helpful and I have found a few.
Two books I have found helpful are The Ultimate Cooking For One Cookbook by Joanie Zisk and Best Simple Suppers for Two by Laura Arnold.
Here are a few tips I have found useful: Use a grocery list when shopping, consider buying smaller quantities of ingredients, repurpose leftovers, consider freezing leftovers, try not to grocery shop when you are hungry, use smaller pans when cooking and use separate containers to store leftovers. Consider buying pre-portioned food items and consider one pot meals.
There is a website, OneDishKitchen.com, which may help. For me, having someone pare down the steps and ingredients needed for food preparation has been so helpful.
Happy cooking!
