Fall & Winter Planting

It seems a GARDENER’S WORK is never done. We need to prepare our growing space for the fall and winter months. Here are a few tips you may find helpful in keeping your plants living and thriving.

Selection and Timing: Choose the right plants, don’t plant too late, consider dormant planting. Be patient. Don’t expect too much top growth from fall and winter plants, the focus is on root development. Remove any dead or dying plants and weeds. Clean and dry tools to prevent rust so that you are ready for the next growing season.

Suitable Plants: Bulbs, trees, shrubs, or cool-season crops. Water plants deeply to keep the soil moist until the ground freezes and apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch to insulate roots, retain moisture, and prevent damaging freeze-thaw cycles. Prepare your soil by adding compost, and consider using frost protection like row covers for seedlings.

We hope these tips will be helpful with your planting throughout the winter season.

Happy planting and see you next month!
